The Hollies were name as a tribute to Buddy Holly. They had a string of hits in the 1960s and then Graham Nash left the band in 1968 to form Crosby Stills and Nash. The band needed a hit in 1972. A long cool women was that hit becoming their biggest hit.
The song sounds more like Credence Clearwater Revival than the Hollies the song was released in 1972.
