A 1967 hit from the band's first album the song was made famous due to the band's live performance on the The Ed Sullivan Show. The producers insisted that the band not sing the line, "girl, we couldn't get much higher" due to the alleged reference to drugs. The band reneged on the promise to change the lyric and clearly sang higher in the live performance.
The Doors were a huge band but they were not invited to Woodstock.
