T- Rex were originally called Tyrannosaurus Rex and recorded 4 albums under that name. Lead singer , Marc Bolan changed the name to T Rex in 1969. Bolan was born Mark Field and created the surname from the BO in BOB and LAN in Dylan as he was a Bob Dylan fan.
The song is classic Glam Rock which was a genre of music charachterised by outrageous costumes, nonsensical lyrics, driving beats and very theatrical live shows. It reached number one in the UK in 1971.
