During the making of the 1977 album Rumours, band members Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were in the process of breaking up there relationship. At the same time Christine and John Mcvie were in the process of divorcing. Go Your Own Way was Buckingham's message to Nicks. The line packing up, shacking up is all you want to do was particularly hurtful to Nicks who pleaded with Lindsay Buckingham to remove it, he refused.
