The title is a play on words of the 1967 film,Space Oddysey 2001 film. It was released on the self titled 1968 album. The following year the BBC used the song as a background to to lunar landing . The producer`s of the lunar landing coverage thought it would be perfect for the show without taking into account that Major Tom the subject of the song was lost in space. Initially the song did not have great airplay in the US but in 1972 the song was released again as the album was changed to Space Oddity and got to #14 in the states, becoming Bowie`s first chart success there.
