From 1974 album, Diamond Dogs, Rebel Rebel is about a boy rebelling against his parents by wearing make up and tacky women`s clothes. The riff was Bowie trying to get a sound similar to The Rolling Stones. One night in London, Bowie was trying to get to sleep when he was kept awake by someone playing the riff loudly and poorly upstairs. When he investigated he found the would be guitarist was tennis legend John Mcenroe.
