America was a combination of sons of American Servicemen that were stationed in England. Horse With No Name was their first and remained their greatest success.
Originally it was banner in some parts of America due to its alleged references to heroin use. Even with those bans the song hit number one in the US in 1972 and a top 30 hit in the Uk and reached number 2 in Australia.
The song was written by Dewey Bunnell who remembered areas of Arizona he spent time at when his father was stationed there. The resemblance to Neil Young caused some controversy with critics calling them Neil Young wannabees.
Ironically when the song reached number 1 in the states it replaced Neil Young's Heart of Gold.
The song has appeared in many tv shows such as Breaking Bad and Friends and was on the Grand Theft Auto Game
